Once the skin is gone, only bones and some ligaments remain -- but as long as the environment remains warm and moist, bacteria and fungi keep working.
Eventually, weathering and microorganisms can recycle the bones, too, returning the last traces of the lizard to the soil to nourish new life cycles. |
