Existing comment: A duplicating device:
The polygraph, or duplicating device, was invented by John Isaac Hawkins in 1803, and quickly found an enthusiast in Thomas Jefferson. The polygraph simultaneously produces a copy while writing the original. Our third President had one by 1804, and because of his prolific writing, historians have a rich source, including duplicates, or his letters.
