After the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in Texas v Johnson that burning that American flag was protected free speech, President George H.W. Bush was so outraged by the decision that he proposed a constitutional amendment banning the burning or desecration of the American flag. Francis "Frank" Albert Sinatra wrote to President Bush, "I applaud you long and loud for your reaction."
