Orr & Painter Collection Box
Mail collection boxes first appeared on US city streets in the late 1850s. Until the mid-20th century those boxes were relatively small and usually mounted on posts. This mailbox style was manufactured by Orr & Painter iron manufacturers of Reading, Pennsylvania in the early 1880s. These cast iron boxes were originally painted dark green. In 1955 the Post Office Department began painting their sidewalk collection boxes with a distinctive blue body and red top design. By the time collection boxes were ordered painted all blue, most of them were the four-footed design common on today's city sidewalks.
