Existing comment: Pullman Porters
From the 1870s to the 1960s, thousands of African American men worked as porters for the Pullman Company, manufacturer of railroad sleeper cars. With the wages and tips they earned tending to passengers, Pullman porters were able to provide a better life for their families. They also served as a vital network of information for African Americans traveling north during the Great Migration.
