Existing comment: In the 1920s, some business leaders thought that posters -- which had been successfully used to mobilize Americans for World War I -- could be used to influence workers' attitudes, reduce industrial conflict, and increase efficiency. Work incentive posters combined eye-catching artwork and succinct slogans to deliver clear messages and timeless advice.

Although intended for workplace use, the posters do not reflect the diversity of American workers at the time. The golden age of work incentive posters ended with the Great Depression of 1929, when the dynamics of the workplace shifted dramatically. But the concept endured and motivational posters still can be found in toady's offices and factories.
