Existing comment: A bronze plate honoring Matthew Shepard, a gay American who was beaten, tortured, and left to die near Laramie, Wyoming on the night of October 6, 1998, was dedicated on Monday night at the Washington National Cathedral. Matt's parents, shown just to the right of the plaque, agreed to inter his ashes here in DC because of worries that his grave would be desecrated if interred in Wyoming.
