Existing comment: Snoopy for President!

Charlie Brown says, 'I only dread one day at a time.' This was a generation that really did fear the next day... sometimes wasn't sure if the next day was going to come.

With all the political turmoil leading pu to the 1968 presidential election, the nation was left trying to make sense of it all. Capitalizing on a character that already brought happiness and laughter in millions of Americans, Hallmark introduced the 'Snoopy for President' campaign. The intent of the campaign was to bring a little joy and lighthearedness back into people's lives. Hallmark's 'Snoopy for President' product line included slogans such as "Happiness is The Best Policy!" abd "Federal Aid to Surfing."
Hallmark also encouraged retailers to turn their storefronts into makeshift 'Snoopy for President' "campaign headquarters." Along with offering engaging and creative merchandise displays for store owners to present their products. Hallmark also distributed booklets, presenting promotional suggestions and offering a network of advice on developing merchandise displays set for success. A Special Report on the Campaign was also circulated among retailers, routing trade success of the campaign through publicity, photographs, and "built-in audience appeal."

It's no wonder the public fell in love with the idea of sending Snoopy to the White House -- some people even went so far as to write-in Snoopy's name on their election ballots!

Though Snoopy would not win the presidential nomination in 1968, 'Snoopy for President' continues to be a popular platform in every election year since. Perhaps it's the universal appeal, charm and ability to make us smile that affords Snoopy and the Peanuts Gang the means to bring great comfort during times of uncertainty.

Political campaigns don't stop -- they just dwindle out.
