The positive cast was then taken to a foundry for a final casting in bronze or to a craftsman to be carved into marble. Unlike many artists, Saint-Gaudens supervised the casting of his works and worked closely with foundries in experimenting with different patinas. A patina contributes to the overall color and texture of a work, and is achieved through the application of heat and acid solutions to form oxides that fuse when headed into the metal.
