During the visit, Hughes was recalled to Washington earlier than scheduled. His party boarded the USS Maryland (BB-46) for the return trip. Running at high speed, the ship raced northward and completed the journey in 10 days and 18 hours, setting a new record. To commemorate the event, the crew presented Hughes with a ship's plaque etched with the dates of the momentous voyage (right). |
