On the return voyage, the Maryland crossed the equator. In keeping with Navy tradition, a "crossing the line" ceremony was held. All those onboard who had not crossed the equator before (known as "pollywogs") were called before King Neptune to be inducted into his realm. Several "wogs" were reportedly tossed in a tub of salt water, but Secretary Hughes escaped unscathed and received his "shellback" certificate (right). |
