Existing comment: Bound for Brazil: Charles Evans Hughes' Diplomatic Trip
Between his two tenures on the Supreme Court, Charles Evans Hughes (portrait on wall to left) held several positions. From 1921 to 1924, he was Secretary of State under President Warren G. Harding. On August 24, 1922, Secretary Hughes departed New York City on a diplomatic mission to attend an exposition celebrating the centennial of Brazil's independence in Rio de Janeiro. Among the official policy (photo above) were Hughes' wife, Antoinette, and their elder daughter, Catherine. Sailing on the ocean liner Pan American, they made the nearly 5,000 mile journey in just under 12 days. Today, non-stop flights make the trip in about 10 hours!
