Existing comment: Iron. Cast iron staircases connect the Capitol's five floors. With the exception of the main marble staircases, all of the original staircases are made of cast iron and feature cast iron supports with marble treads as well as cast iron railings with wooden handrails. Iron ore deposits found near Cedar City in 1849 were used to produce the first smelted iron west of the Mississippi. Today iron is mined at multiple locations throughout Utah.
