Existing comment: Gypsum is a soft sulfate mineral used in the plaster ornamentation that gives the Capitol interior much of its beauty and elegance. Often it is painted or gilded, as seen on the curved ceiling of the dome and heavily molded ceilings of the House, Senate and Supreme Court Chambers, and Gold Room. The best place to view gypsum in its natural form is the "mountain" of gypsum in Capitol Reef National Park.
