Existing comment: The statue of Maryland native Supreme Court Chief Justice Roger Taney was removed from the grounds of the Annapolis state capitol on August 18 as open season continues on pro-slavery statues across America. Taney, as the lead writer of the infamous Dred Scott Decision (1857), undermined the delicate unholy balance that kept pro- and anti-slavery forces in equilibrium before the Civil War. Taney's wife, BTW, was the sister of Francis Scott Key. Key was a founding member of the American Colonization Society but broke with the group when they started to become pro-abolitionist.
