Julio 26–Cuba Vietnam y Nosotros Venceremos
1972
offset lithograph on paper

Chicano civil rights activists connected their efforts in the context of the United States to global liberation movements challenging dictatorships and colonial regimes. Montoya's Julio 26–Cuba Vietnam y Nosotros Venceremos weds imagery of the Cuban Revolution and Vietnam with the Chicano struggle at home by adding the word nosotros, or "us," to the text. The phrase "Julio 26" (July 26) references Fidel Castro's successful guerilla movement that toppled the military dictatorship of Cuban president Fulgencio Batista in 1959.
