After the Civil War, park engineer Augustus Faul worked with famed architect George A. Frederick, to design and build notable features in Patterson Park. The graceful fountain, near the Lombard Street entrance, was built in 1865, and the entrance structures there, in 1869. The Superintendent's House (White House) was completed in 1866, and various service buildings were added between 1870 and 1881.
Entrances at Lombard Street/Patterson Park Avenue, Linwood Street, and Eastern Avenue were all restored in 2002. The fountain restoration will be completed in 2003, thanks to a $100,000 gift from the TKF Foundation.
Restoration of the Pagoda was completed in 2002, with grants from the Maryland Historical Trust and Program Open Space, plus numerous private donations/
The Boat Lake, another popular historic Park feature, was neglected for many years. Work on its restoration (a $2.2 million project) was begun in 2002, and completed in 2003. Always an important habitat for Park wildlife, the restored Boat Lake now enhances life for the great variety of birds, turtles, insects, amphibians and fish that make their home there. It is also a key recreational attraction for Batimoreans once again, as it was in days gone by.
Other recent Park improvements include: Pulaski Monument renovation, 2001; Victorian style perimeter lighting, 2002; new flagpoles, 2001-2002; a new playground and an urban fitness trail, 2003.
