Armor Soldiers also learned to operate dismounted, conducting the same patrols, raids, security details, and checkpoints traditionally associated with infantry. Additional training in clearing buildings and fighting on foot also became standard for Armor personnel. While these types of actions differ from the more traditional mounted experience, they have also permitted Armor Soldiers an opportunity to interact more effectively with the Iraqi population. Such interaction helped to build better relations and a degree of trust considered critical to the success of the counterinsurgency.
