Existing comment: The Second Thunder Run: Here To Stay:
The tactical success of the first thunder run, however, did not trigger the collapse of Saddam Hussein's regime. Instead, international media continued to repeat the Iraqi government's claim that US forces were tied down in heavy fighting and had not entered the city. Consequently, the 3rd Infantry Division conducted a second thunder run on 7 April. This time, the entire 2nd Brigade Combat Team was employed and arrangements were made to include a Fox News team. The objective of this attack lay in occupying key sites in Baghdad, including the Republican Palace and parade grounds, where Saddam Hussein had once reviewed his soldiers. The brigade combat team planned to seize and hold three objective points along the route, dubbed Larry, Mo, and Curly. With these positions secured, supplied could reach the advance elements at the parade ground and ensure the entire brigade's ability to hold its positions overnight against anticipated counterattacks. As the American armored column moved forward, it met the same, intense resistance encountered on the first thunder run. Mortar rounds, small arms, rocket propelled grenades, and snipers constituted the principal threat. A command post was hit and several supply vehicles ignited. However, all of the objectives were secured and supplies delivered to each point. Moreover, the success of the operation was communicated to the world when Fox News held a live broadcast from the Republican Palace and parade ground. Saddam Hussein's regime collapsed within days.
