Existing comment: Cold War Border Security:
All along the border with Soviet Bloc nations, NATO had safeguards to restrict entry of dangerous communist infiltrators and provide advanced warning of any aggressive military actions by the Warsaw Pact. Every road in and out of Soviet Bloc territory had an armored checkpoint on the border. Along the stretches of territory without roads, American armored cavalry regiments patrolled and surveyed communist territory to provide intelligence and advanced warning of an invasion.
