Existing comment: Armor and Air Cavalry Cooperation:
In another significant departure from conventional doctrine, armored units, traditionally used as the exploitation force, often engaged enemy forces, while airmobile infantrymen deployed to outmaneuver them. Helicopters permitted airmobile infantry to move rapidly to block enemy movements. They relied on the firepower of helicopter gunships, which mounted an array of rockets and machine guns. Air cavalry provided armored columns a means of vertically enveloping the enemy. New doctrine soon evolved to exploit the relative strengths of ground and air cavalry. Given the extremely dense foliage, ground units frequently relied on air cavalry to guide them to their objectives and provide security from the air while in motion.
