America Comes to South Korea's Defense:
The invasion surprised American policymakers, but US military support was quickly committed to defending South Korea. President Truman believed that failure to respond would encourage further communist aggression in the region. The United Nations also endorsed support of South Korea and intervened. Under US leadership, military forces from 16 nations fought to sustain South Korea. In addition to the US, these nations included Britain, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Colombia, Ethiopia, France, Greece, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the Philippines, Thailand, Turkey, and South Africa. |
