Existing comment: Recovery:
Recovery of the two light tanks was an international effort. The Afghan Army and American soldiers provided technical support and security. British and Polish Army engineers cleared a lane to the tanks' location, the rigged and loaded them for transport. The tanks and loose parts were loaded onto American trucks and shipped to the airfield at Bagram, Afghanistan. The United States Air Force then flew the two vehicles back to the United States. The small size of the Fort Knox airfield meant the tanks had to be off-loaded at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and then moved by truck to the Patton Museum restoration facility.
