Hand grenades had been in use for centuries, but the modern grenade still in use today was developed for the trench warfare of WWI. The new grenades had the advantage of a self-contained fuse, which meant the position of the thrower was not given away by the telltale glow of a match, a drawback of earlier grenades. |
