Existing comment: Doris C. Freedman Plaza

"Empire" will be on display at the southeast corner of Central Park through August 2011.

The Doris C. Freedman Plaza is located at the southeast corner of Centra Park and is home to rotating sculptural art installations, courtesy of the City's Public Art Fund. It is named for the founder of the Public Art Fund and has been the site of more than 50 such projects since 1977.

The current displayed work is a steel sculpture by artist Eva Rothschild titled "Empire." The sculpture is meant to reference the role of the Plaza as one of the most heavily used entrances of the Park. Rising nearly 20 feet over the Plaza, the sculpture takes the form of a multi-directional arched gateway.
