The population of California's Gold Country in 1850 was over 90% male -- and hardly any of them knew how to cook, do laundry, or run a household. These rootless young men didn't stick around long. Those who did searched for ways to make this frontier look like the homes they came from. Middle-class women were the necessary ingredient, and the kitchen was where they turned camps into communities. |
