The Captain and the Kids, no. 447
n.d.

Rudolph Dirks was a painter, engraver, and cartoonist. In 1897, he created the successful comic strip The Katzenjammer Kids (later called The Captain and the Kids), with characters speaking English with German accents. Considered to be one of the founding fathers of American comics, Dirks was one of the first to use a framed sequence strip, as well as an expanded use of balloon dialogues. Although he was not the creator of these techniques, Dirks helped create the standard for comic strips.
