Existing comment: Henri-Charles Guérard (French, 1846–1897)
Beggars, 1874
Etching
Negative print from etched plate

Stirred by the irreverent and vulgar qualities of the Renaissance writer François Rabelais and inspired by his respect for Rembrandt, Guérard was drawn to lowlife subject matter, which he treated in the manner of the Dutch masters. Here, he depicts two beggars inspired by the work of Rembrandt.
