La Rue Chevert, before 1888
Etching and aquatint
Etching, aquatint, and toolwork

This pair of prints exemplifies Guérard's bold, experimental spirit. By carefully pockmarking the sheet, perhaps with an etching tool, to remove a small amount of paper pulp, he transformed the image of a carriage disappearing down the narrow rue Chevert into a wintry scene, replete with falling snow. By mounting the print on Japanese paper speckled with gold, the artist enhanced the effects of the flurry.
