Existing comment: A View of the Obelisk, 1766
Engraving
Revere created this copperplate engraving for Boston's celebration of the repeal of the Stamp Act, an unpopular tax on paper documents imposed by the English Parliament in 1765. An obelisk, or column, erected on Boston Common for the event praised King George III for restoring liberty to the colonists.
Revere's detailed image, showing all our sides of the obelisk, is the only visual record remaining. A re-creation of the obelisk is on display at the entrance to the exhibition.
