Existing comment: George Washington
Letter to Artemas Ward
New York City, August 12, 1776
General George Washington wrote to Artemas Ward to request additional munitions at a time when the British Army, 32,000 men strong, occupied New York Harbor and Staten Island. Two weeks later the Battle of Brooklyn occurred. Ward was one of the first generals appointed to the Continental Army by Washington in 1775. Sea mortars, made of iron, were short guns that were mounted on flat beds, then elevated at an angle to fire exploding shells.
