Existing comment: Letter from Robert Lincoln to Gustavus Vasa Fox containing lock of Abraham Lincoln's hair, May 1, 1865
Shortly after his father's assassination, Robert Lincoln, the president's eldest son, wrote this letter to Gustavus Vasa Fox, the Assistant Secretary of the United States Navy. As the younger Lincoln notes, the hair sample was part of a larger lock clipped and divided by the Springfield, Illinois, embalmer who prepared the president's body for its funereal tour across the United States.
