Existing comment: Hair chopper and curling iron, 1775-95
New-York Historical's collection includes John Ramage's work desk and tools, such as devices for working with hair. Ramage probably used the curling iron to create elaborate curls or designs reminiscent of furling feathers or flowers. Similarly, the chopper likely minced hair before it was mixed into the artist's pigments.
