Existing comment: Freedom from Fear
The Saturday Evening Post, March 13, 1948, pp 12-13
Text by Stephen Vincent Benet

Poet and novelist Stephen Vincent Benet was best-known for his 1941 short story, The Devil and Daniel Webster. Unlike the other essayists, he refers directly to Rockwell's art in his final paragraph. He reminds readers that the fighting against fear is ultimately a fight against ignorance, and that humankind must advance understanding to be at peace. Ironically, Benet died the day this issue of the Post appeared.
