Willie Gillis: Food Package, 1941
Cover illustration for The Saturday Evening Post, October 4, 1941

The first of Rockwell's Willie Gillis covers appeared on October 4, 1941. In it, the artist introduced a new, unassuming character to Americans. Private Gillis, in boot camp at Fort Dix, New Jersey is enjoying the prospect of opening a care package from loved ones back home, as as his fellow soldiers plot a way to share in his bounty. Post readers loved the Gillis character, but one careful observer wrote to complain that the package's postage would have been insufficient.
