Rockwell's Navy record shows that his service lasted for less than four months -- he enlisted on July 31, 1918 and was discharged for "ineptitude" on November 19, 1918. His service record reads: "Rockwell is an artist and unaccustomed to hard manual labor." When he arrived in New Rochelle following his discharge, "I walked straight home, slung my sea home, slung my sea bag in the closet, kissed Irene, and rushed out to look at my studio.
