Lieutenant Emmet Cook, a bombardier from the 8th Air Force and being held as a prisoner of war in Stalag Luft III, created in his idle time an original design of Donald Duck sharing his captivity also as a prisoner of war. He forwarded the design home to his mother on a prisoner of war post card (Kreigsgfangenenlager) on June 8th, 1943.
The design became widely known and popular throughout the prison camp. Another bombardier in the camp, Lieutenant Robert Bishop, copied the design on another postcard and sent it to his girlfriend with the request that it be forwarded to Walt Disney Productions asking if an insignia could be created. The Disney design team found little to change in the design and quickly produced an "official" insignia for all of the prisoners of war in Stalag Luft III.
