"The marks and gouges in the floor tell the story of thousands of litters carrying the wounded... deformed, bleeding, burned, some dying. The amber iodine stains speak of the lifesaving procedures... chest tubes, central IV lines, even open thoracotomies... done with an intensity and unity of effort to rival any battlefield ... as more casualties were treated there than perhaps anywhere else in Iraq. That 4'x8' piece of floor became hallowed ground."
