Existing comment: In August, 1918, the Army Medical Department was ordered to activate a number of "mobile degassing units," special surgical ambulances for gas poisioning treatment. These units were intended to be positions near the front so that they could quickly respond to gas casualties.

A five-ton truck was equipped with a 1,200-gallon tank and "instantaneous heater" to provide hot water for portable shower baths. Another vehicle carried fuel, underwear, uniforms, and medical supplies.

Unfortunately for the thousands of AEF mustard gas casualties, very few of these mobile degassing units saw service before the war concluded.
