After the September 11, 2001 attack on the Pentagon, the Office of the Armed Forces Medical Examiner examined remains and collected evidence during its postmortem examination of the recovered bodies. On the day following the attack, 38 pouches of human remains and 13 boxes of unidentified remains were flown to the Port Mortuary at Dover Air Force Base. Antemortem records for the presumed victims were collected from across the country and also flown to Dover. By November 16, 2001, all but five of the 189 decedents had been scientifically identified.
