Existing comment: To assist their documentation of wounds and healing, Museum staff also collected medical photographs and illustrations. Staff made portraits of patients at the Museum, often showing stages of healing. Some of these photographs were published in sets of fifty called "Photographs of Surgical Cases and Specimens." Most of the information collected, however, appeared in the six-volume "Medical and Surgical History of the War of the Rebellion," completed in the late 1880s.
