Existing comment: Dr. Harvey's Story:
Thomas Stoltz Harvey, MD (1912-2007) was a pathologist most well-known for conducting the autopsy on Albert Einstein in 1955 and acting as custodian of Einstein's brain for more than 50 years, during which time he shared the material with prominent neuroscientists. Using methods conventional for the time, Harvey sectioned a large portion of Einstein's preserved brain and created histological slides, which allowed the tissue to be seen through a microscope. As a result, Harvey's possession, histological processing, and allocation of the tissue were the source of numerous publications and media coverage.
During his lifetime, Harvey distributed the Einstein slides to leading researchers and retained two complete sets. He later donated the remaining, uncut portion of Einstein's brain to colleagues in Princeton, New Jersey.
Several years after his death in 2007, Harvey's estate donated his slides and related archival material to the National Museum of Health and Medicine.
