During WWI, the number of American casualties due to disease and infection was higher than combat casualties due to trauma. Addressing disease pathogens became an important factor in battlefield medical treatment. In addition to primary infections such as the H1N1 influenza virus, secondary bacterial respiratory infections and bacterial infections following traumatic injury (primarily battlefield wounds) were of concern to military medical practitioners. The specimens in this display serve as examples of the types of primary and secondary infections addressed in October and November of 1918.
