Lighting at night, other than campfire, was by candle or lamps. Candles were usually made of tallow (beef fat) or pork fat and were often in short supply. The most common lamp, called the "Betty Lamp," was a simple pot filled with oil that had a wick. It had no globe or reflector. Betty Lamps were easy to carry due to their small size and they were very durable.
