Existing comment: The Havelock:
Havelocks were white cloth covers designed to be worn over a soldier's cap. They were designed to prevent sunstroke in hot climates by shielding the neck from sunlight, but the men soon discovered that they limited air circulation around the face and neck and made them feel hotter, not cooler. Well-meaning ladies aid societies provided them to their regiments, but would have been surprised to find that they were not used for their intended purpose, but rather as dishrags or coffee strainers.
