Medical school diploma from Georgetown University Medical School, Washington DC, awarded to Dr. Joseph Sim Smith in 1858. During the Civil War, Dr. Smith became Chief Division Surgeon of the Fifth Army Corps. In 1865, he received an appointment as Chief Medical Officer of the Washington DC region. His final assignment came in 1867 when he was sent to Fort Jefferson, an island fort south of Florida in an area known as the Dry Tortugas. While serving on the island, Dr. Smith and one of his sons contracted yellow fever and died.
