Existing comment: The Missing Soldiers Office:
Barton's office took up most of the third floor of a boarding house in Washington DC, located on 7th Street between D Street and E Street. She had a small living space connected to the work space. Edward Shaw, her landlord, and some of the clerks who worked with her also had rooms on the third floor.
After Barton left for Europe in 1868, Shaw remained at the 7th Street location until 1911. Barton moved to her new property in Glen Echo, Maryland in 1897. The 7th Street property remained nearly untouched until it was re-discovered by the General Services Administration in 1998. Items belonging to both Barton and Shaw were found in the rooms and recovered by the GSA.
In 2012, the GSA and the National Museum of Civil War Medicine singed an agreement to create a museum where the Missing Soldiers Office once was, ensuring that Barton's legacy of caring will be known for generations to come.
