Existing comment: Meet the Elk Herds of Yellowstone

Elks are social animals. Each population, or "herd," is a collection of smaller groups that grow and shrink throughout the year. The overall herd is usually named after a feature of its traditional winter range. The nine Yellowstone herds you see here, which currently range in size from about 2,000 to 10,000 individuals, have a lot in common. Yet naturally, given the vast area they span, important aspects of their habitat also differ.
