Unintended consequences of overfishing:
Atlantic cod populations are under severe fishing pressure -- overall numbers have dropped by 90 to 99 percent in the North Atlantic since 1970. By removing the largest fish, fishermen have left behind a population of smaller adults that mature younger. Worse yet, the removal of a top predator has significantly altered the entire ecosystem.
