Chocolate contains small amounts of caffeine, the main stimulant in coffee. Since coffee did not exist in the Americas at the time, chocolate would have been among the most stimulating foods available. One Spaniard wrote, "When one has drunk this beverage, one can travel all day without fatigue and without taking any nourishment." Among the locals, chocolate was considered too stimulating and intoxicating for women and children.
